Roanoke: The lost colony

In some classes I had mentioned the lost colony of Roanoke.  If you are interested in finding out more information, click here http://www.powerset.com/explore/semhtml/Lost_Colony_DNA_Project?query=Lost+Colony+DNA+Project for the link to the article about the DNA project that is trying to see if the citizens survived or not.  Another interesting article I found that talks about Jamestown and Roanoke is from PBS.  I mentioned today in class about the disappearance of the settlement Roanoke and how historians still do not what happened to the people of the first colony.  Of course there theories aplenty out there.  What I like about this article is the fact that it discusses realistic ideas as to the disappearance of the settlers.  Read on to find out what I mean: http://www.pbs.org/saf/1203/features/climatology.htm

What do you think happened to these people?

This article was very interesting. There were so many settlers and groups of people in our history that it’s hard to know whether or not they exsisted. I’m sure there’s plenty of evidence with the DNA and stuff, but I can’t keep up so I’m not sure. If they were really a colony back in the day, then they probably were killed by diseases or something carried from other people. Also, another group could have tried taking them over, and killed them off. There might have not been very many but then I again, I would never know. It’s interesting how we find connections with just DNA to past people even colonies. I have no clue what could have happened to these people because I don’t even know if they exsist or not. Obviously not many survived long enough to tell the story. It would be really cool if someone from that time period lived today to tell of those times so we’d actually know alot more truth from our history. All students are really getting is text books. If I could bring back someone I would probably bring Pocahontas. She would be cool to talk to. Anyway, the article was interesting to read and I encourage others to read it.

I think that the Roanoke people joined the Native Americans in their area. Either that or they moved somewhere else hoping the climate was better and didn’t make it due to another casuse. Perhaps the Roanoke people made it and we haven’t found their belongings they have left behind yet. I also concur with Nicole that the articitle was interesting and I hope others will take the time to read it as well.

Anything could have happend to them… they could have been anialated by native in the area or also killed by plauge. Or even they killed themselves also . The thing is only they know and that will be a mystery and a wonder of the world

It is very weird that the just disappeared. The was no evidence to prove the were killed of taken as prisoners. I think that maybe the did join with native groups in the area. The were left with no food or supplies, so the had to get food some how. If the left you alone with no food, eventually you will get hungry. You are not going to wait and die there waiting. Most of us are going to try to get food somehow. I think the way that they got food was from their native friends. So my guess is that the joined up with the natives to survive. The only clue we have is “croaton” which was carved in to a tree. This just happens to be the name of the island their native friends lived on. So my most logical explanation would be the left with there friend. The article is not long and its very interesting so I think you should read it.

I personally believe the colonists were absorbed into the local native tribes
